Ten Things to Expect At Your Routine Dental Visit Marietta, GA

Ten Things to Expect At Your Routine Dental Visit

A routine dental checkup includes more than just a fancy cleaning and checking for cavities. Your dental exam is carried out by a skilled hygienist and board certified dentist who carefully and methodically evaluate your entire oral health. Here’s what to expect when you show up for your next six-month dental exam:

  1. Health History: We always ask about your general health, including any changes in your health history. This helps us identify any issues that may be causing dental-related symptoms and it also informs us on special precautions that should be taken during your cleaning.
  2. Evaluating Your Gum Health: Your hygienist monitors more than just your teeth. We perform a meticulous exam on your periodontal health as well. This includes checking for inflammation or redness in your gums that may signal early gum disease as well as monitoring any areas of gum recession.
  3. Cancer Screening: One step that we perform that you may not even be aware of is an oral cancer screening. We look at the soft tissues of your mouth and identify lumps, bumps, sores, tenderness or areas of swelling. We also use VELScope oral cancer screening technology that detects oral cancer at its earliest possible stage. The entire mouth is examined in just a few minutes, and it is totally painless for the patient.
  4. Cavity Check: A hygienist will examine all areas of your smile for areas of tooth decay. The dentist will follow up with areas of stains or hardened plaque and recommend a treatment plan.
  5. Scaling: Next, we will use hand tools and/or an ultrasonic scaler to remove calculus from your teeth. Remember these areas of hard mineral deposits are not removable with brushing and flossing at home.
  6. Polishing: A special high-powered mechanical polisher is used to polish the surface of your teeth. This allows patients to leave with a white, smooth and refreshed smile.
  7. Measuring: Did you know that your hygienist takes measurements inside your mouth during your routine exam? Periodontal disease develops by forming pockets between the teeth and gums. Therefore, we use small probes to measure this space and make sure it is less than 3mm. Pockets of 4 to 5mm can be an indication of gum disease. In such cases, we may recommend further treatment or extra care at home.
  8. X-Rays: On a periodic basis, we will also take x-rays of your teeth, gums and jaw. Our office uses digital x-rays that are faster and safer than traditional x-ray film.
  9. Education:
We will conclude your appointment with a simple one-on-one discussion. It is at this time that Dr. Gilreath will explain the observed conditions of your dental health and listen to your specific concerns. If further treatment is recommended, we will educate you on what to expect.
  10. Making Your Next Appointment: Last but not least, we always provide a time that allows you to make your next dental appointment. This is helpful for busy patients that may forget or put off scheduling future cleaning appointments.

If you have further questions about what to expect at your routine dental checkup at Gilreath Family Dentistry, please give us a call. We know that by keeping patients well-informed about their dental care, we are able to greatly reduce associated anxiety and make the overall experience more enjoyable.

Dr. Gilreath is incredible with my kids. They love going to the dentist now! And this busy mom loves the warm neck wraps, the soft music and enjoying a latte while I relax!

Was lucky enough to find these guys when I got insurance that my old dentist did not take. Very professional and friendly staff! Office has the latest greatest technology as well. If you're looking for a new dentist, search no further!

Susie L.

Very personable and friendly, they took the time to go over my complex dental history and did not pressure me into anything. They gave their recommendations and priced out any options I had. Great group!

Dr. Gilreath and his staff are top notch. I received the best cleaning I've ever had while watching my favorite show. The Doctor and his staff were all very polite, friendly, and courteous. They explained everything to me clearly and presented me with options in a gentle way that didn't make me feel pressured at all. It's obvious they really care about the wellbeing of their patients. The facility and equipment is really nice as well. I will definitely be back!

Always willing to work around my kids and my schedules. Today I had a long appointment. They started on time and always made sure I was comfortable and that the pain was managed so the procedure could’ve been completed without issues. Very courteous and professional staff.

Awesome dental practice! The staff is friendly and efficient. Dr. Gilreath is thorough and versed in the latest technology and procedures. I love that he can make crowns in the office while you wait (so no walking around with a temporary crown for days or weeks). I would strongly recommend this dental practice!

I've been going here for about a little over a year now. I've had a few cleanings, a filling, and started Invisiline so far. Hands down, the best run dental office I've ever been to. In the past at other dental offices I often had to wait 30 or more minutes beyond my appointment time before being seen. At Dr. Gilreath's office I've been seen on time every time. They seem to have systems in place to make every part of your visit run smoothly. From how they took x-rays, to billing and appointments, to the work done by the hygienist/dentist, everything seems to run like a well oiled machine. On top of that all the staff are all friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The office space itself is also quite nice. Very clean, well maintained, and seems very "up to date" with their equipment. If you're looking for a dentist and are anywhere in the northwest metro area I would highly recommend Dr. Gilreath.

The staff is always so courteous and personable. They make us feel like family every time we have an appointment. Service is excellent, too. My wife recently went for a cleaning and Dr. Gilreath noticed a chip in one of her fillings. He knew we recently had another baby and that her time was very limited so he went ahead and did the filling right then and there, an extra thirty minutes tops. Dr. Gilreath is always looking at the big picture and really knows his stuff. We will never go anywhere else
