Think you know all there is to know about your teeth and how to care for them? While we spend most of our time educating patients about their oral health and the dental procedures we offer, we also like to share some fun facts about dentistry. Here are some interesting facts about several elements of your oral health:
Your Tongue
Your tongue is as unique as your thumbprint. It also needs brushing, as millions of bacteria live and breed within the deep, moist grooves of your tongue every day. Brushing your tongue is the biggest weapon against bad breath!
Your Teeth
Tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your entire body – it is stronger than your bones! However, it is not invincible. Don’t use your teeth to open bottles or packaging – teeth can still chip, fracture or break.
Your Brushing Routine
How long are you brushing your teeth? It is recommended that you brush at least 2 minutes twice a day. However, the average patient only spends 48 seconds. Set your timer next time you brush to make sure you are doing the job to the fullest. Your smile will thank you!
Your Spit
The average person produces up to 25,000 quarts of saliva in their lifetime. That’s enough to fill 2 swimming pools! Saliva is critical for the health of your teeth, as it neutralizes acids and helps wash away harmful
Your Flossing Habits
If you fail to floss your teeth, you are missing up to 35% of your tooth surfaces. A toothbrush simply can’t reach in those tight spaces in between your teeth. Unfortunately, plaque, bacteria and food debris can – so don’t neglect your daily flossing habit.
