What is the benefit? By detecting a cavity early, your dentist is able to provide a much more conservative treatment. In some cases, the cavity may be so early that preventative therapies (such as sealants and fluoride) are implemented to help patients avoid treatment while the dentist simply monitors the affected area.
Laser cavity detection devices are sophisticated instruments that are comfortable for the patient and more accurate for the dentist. These tools provide precise measurements to the dentist so that an appropriate treatment plan can be put in place immediately.
How Does it Work?
Most laser cavity detection tools work by revealing structural changes in the teeth by measuring the fluorescence of each tooth layer after a laser light shines on the teeth. A clean, healthy tooth shows minimal or no fluorescence, resulting in low unit readings. If a tooth has a cavity, the tooth exhibits greater fluorescence and the laser detection device corresponds with a higher reading and audio signal.
