Holiday Teeth Habits to Avoid
We can all agree that although the holidays are a favorite time of the year, they can be quite stressful and cause us to slack on taking care of ourselves. There are some important oral health habits that we easily fall into during the holidays. Take the time to care for your teeth this month so you are not paying for it in the New Year. Here are some helpful reminders to follow when it comes to your teeth during the holidays.
Limit the nutty and sticky. Holiday parties are filled with bowls of nuts and candy to graze upon. Be careful not to crack any nutshells with your teeth, which can lead to serious tooth and gum damage. Instead get that healthy protein using an old-fashioned nutcracker. In addition, avoiding the sticky and chewy treats will not only help your waistline, but it will do your teeth a favor as well. These super sticky indulgences can cling to your teeth enamel and invite tooth decay or they may even dislodge one of your fillings!
Don’t use your teeth to cope with stress. Stress levels seem to be at an all time high during the holidays. If this is you, avoid the urge to involve your teeth in a stressful situation. Ice chomping, teeth grinding and nail biting are common stress-induced habits that can wreak havoc on your oral health and easily introduce unwanted bacteria.
Use scissors, not your teeth. We hope your holidays are filled with lots of gifts and cheer. However, when it’s time to dive into opening your package or remove a price tag from a new shirt, grab some scissors to do the cutting. Your teeth are not meant for ripping and pulling. Save them for chewing food and smiling this holiday season.
There are many things to enjoy during the holidays, but do not get so busy that you ignore your teeth. By taking care of your oral health now, you will give yourself something to smile about in the New Year!
