Tooth Sensitivity Treatments at Marietta Dentist
Spring has sprung! No doubt many of us are enjoying the fresh fruits coming into season, thus providing a welcome boost to our immune system. Coupled with this, however, some patients have reported their teeth being more sensitive than usual. If such is your experience, have no worries! There are multiple preventive and palliative treatments available which will enable you to continue to enjoy your favorite fruits as often as you wish. Tooth sensitivity often results when the acidity of the fruit (how sour it is) and the rate of consumption are both high. Why? Higher acidity levels strip the teeth of its protective barrier, while at the same time opening microscopic tubules which make the teeth more perceptive of temperature changes.
What can be done to counteract this? The following list will help:
- Use fluoride containing toothpaste daily, preferably one designed to treat sensitivity, such as Synsodyne.
- Drink a glass of water after eating the fruit. This will help clear you mouth of residual acids faster.
- Chew a piece of sugar-free gum after eating the fruit. A xylitol based gum, such as Xylishield, is especially beneficial because it will speed the return to normal pH in your mouth as well as helping prevent cavities.
Remember though, if sensitivity lingers in spite of behavior modification and the above aids, you should contact our office to schedule a checkup.
Wishing everyone a healthy and pleasant spring,
Esther Myatt, RDH.
